United Bank Promotes Marshall Cooper to Regional President of Southern Region
WILMINGTON, NC – United Bank recently named Marshall Cooper as Regional President of its southern region, encompassing parts of North and South Carolina. In the role, Cooper will direct and oversee the day-to-day banking activities, client relationships, and business development of the six markets within United’s southern region. This includes the Bank’s Wilmington and Brunswick, NC markets and all South Carolina locations, specifically, the Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville, SC markets.
“United is unique in that we’re able to offer the insights, technologies, products, and services of a large bank, while still operating with a community bank approach, winning market to market,” said Cooper. “The Bank is teeming with opportunity, and it’s truly a blessing that United is who I’ve had the opportunity to grow with and help shape the future in the Carolinas region.”
Cooper has more than 20 years of experience in the banking and financial services industry, most recently serving as market president for United’s Wilmington, NC Market. He joined the Bank through CresCom as part of United’s 2020 acquisition of its parent company, Carolina Financial Corporation, where he was SVP, Wilmington Market Executive. Prior to CresCom, he held leadership roles at Coastal Federal Bank and Bank of America.
Since its founding in 1839, United has grown from a single-office bank to a premier regional banking company with a strong presence throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, including 34 locations in South Carolina and more than 65 across the wider Carolinas. In 2023, United earned the position of the No. 1 bank in South Carolina on Forbes’ list of Best-in-State banks.
“The Carolinas has long been one of the most desirable banking markets in the nation, and as such, we are constantly looking for ways to better serve our local communities there,” said Henry Kayes, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, United Bank. “Marshall’s experience, performance, and leadership approach as the former Wilmington Market President proved he was a perfect fit for this job. We’re excited to see how he continues to deliver and how United continues to grow under his leadership in this coveted region.”
A North Carolina native, Cooper graduated from University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) with a B.S. in Marketing. He says his time playing baseball with the Seahawks shaped his leadership style.
“I grew up an athlete, so I often relate things to sports and I know what it takes to win,” said Cooper. “I consider myself a coach; my job is to guide my team to maximize their potential. And when it comes to providing our customers in the Carolinas with best-in-class banking service, that’s what we’re going to do, that’s how we win.”
Cooper has served in various leadership and consultative roles in the community, including on the Executive Board of the UNCW Seahawk Club and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Finance Committee. He and his wife, Kelly, reside in Leland with their family. They enjoy traveling, oyster roasts, and sports, especially supporting the Seahawks.
