How to Use Zelle® to Safely Send Money

Pay It Safe With Zelle®

Only send money to those you trust.

Zelle® should only be used with friends, family and others you trust. Why? Because you can't cancel a payment once it's been sent, if the recipient is already enrolled with Zelle®. And if you send money to someone you don't know, or you do not get what you expected, you may not get your money back.

Treat Zelle® like cash.

While Zelle® and cash are certainly different, both provide the recipient with fast access to the money you send. With Zelle®, money moves directly into the enrolled recipient's bank account within minutes1. And again, once you authorize a payment to be sent, you can't cancel it if the recipient is already enrolled.

Beware of payment scams.

If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For example, a stranger selling online concert tickets at a steep discount and insisting you pay with Zelle® may be a scam.

Neither United Bank nor Zelle®  offers purchase protection for payments made with Zelle;® for example, if you do not receive the item you paid for, or the item is not as described or as you expected.

Confirm your recipient's contact information.

Make sure you have the correct U.S. mobile number or email address for the person you want to send money to. When in doubt, contact your friend to double check. If you authorize a payment to be sent to the wrong person, you may not get your money back.

Understand your payment options.

If you don't know a person or aren't sure you’ll get what you paid for, using your credit card may be a better payment option. Many credit card companies offer built-in buyer protections for cardholders. Check the terms and conditions of your credit card to see what's offered.

Zelle® Security Tips

Zelle® should only be used to send money to, or receive money from people you trust. If you are unsure of a recipient's email address or U.S. mobile number, you should contact the recipient to confirm their information before using Zelle to send them money. Neither United Bank nor Zelle® offers purchase protection for payments made with Zelle;®  for example, if you do not receive the item you paid for, or the item is not as described or as you expected. With these parameters, it’s safest to only use Zelle with confirmed friends, family, co-workers, and members of your community that you trust.

To protect your bank account, it is vital to use a unique password. Choose a password that you have never used for another account and will not reuse in the future. While it may seem convenient to use the same password across multiple applications, doing so significantly increases your risk of compromise.

Both online and mobile banking platforms follow industry best practices to safeguard your information. These include HTTPS connections, 128-bit SSL encryption, secure password access, and automatic session time-outs when your device or browser is inactive. For mobile banking, only the devices you personally enroll can access your accounts, and no account data is ever stored on your mobile device.

The best way to protect yourself is to actively monitor your account activity, including Zelle® transactions.  For Zelle®, suspicious activity may result in the transaction being blocked until you contact us by phone or visit your local branch.

If your phone has been lost or stolen, or if you notice suspicious activity on your phone, please immediately contact Customer Care at 1.800.327.9862. In order to protect your accounts, we can subsequently disable Zelle® on your mobile banking profile and temporarily remove access to your mobile and online banking features. You have the ability to temporarily or permanently disable your account at any time by calling us at 1.800.327.9862.

Only specific cell phone carriers use SIM Cards, but if you use a SIM Card with your mobile device, we strongly suggest that you contact your cell phone carrier and make sure your personal information is accurate and secure. There have been reports across the telecommunications industry that fraudsters have found vulnerabilities with how companies verify information when replacing a customer’s SIM Card. Most cell phone carriers allow their customers to add additional security to protect their account, like using an account PIN.

We recommend that our online and mobile banking customers routinely review the security of their personal information across all online services that they currently use. Recommended online practices include putting a passcode lock on your mobile phone, never sharing your personal information via email or text, and being aware that fraudsters have the ability to pose as legitimate companies. United Bank will never ask you to share your personal information over text or email.
