The scammers have been busy. The Federal Trade Commission has reported that U.S. consumers lost nearly $8.8 billion to scams in 2022, which is an over 30% increase compared to 2021. Investment scams are particularly rampant with over $3.8 billion in losses, more than any other category.
We’ve developed this quick quiz to help you learn more about financial scams. If you think you have been scammed, you should contact the FTC or a law enforcement agency.
If you think you’ve been the victim of a banking scam, or that your credit card has been compromised, call United Bank’s Customer Care immediately at 800.327.9862 or call the number on the back of your card.
Let's start the quiz.
In general, scammers use some basic tactics to get you into their game:
- They pretend to be to be from an organization or company you know.
- They say there’s either a problem you need to deal with or a prize you can get.
- They put pressure on you to act immediately.
- They tell you to pay in a specific way, for example with prepaid or gift cards.
You can stay one step ahead by learning about the newest scams as they pop up. The best sources are sites such as Fraud.org, the FTC, and AARP’s fraud site.
